However, this doesn’t have to be the case, as there are so many healthy comfort food alternatives that replace the unhealthy ingredients from our favourite comfort foods and to let you enjoy them guilt-free. 1. Chia Seed Gel

Chia seed gel is a great alternative for eggs and oil in cakes, biscuits and most other tasty baked good you may be craving. Satisfy your sweet tooth while incorporating a healthy alternative into the recipe.

 How to make/use it: Chia seed gel is so simple. Simply mix 1/3 cup of chia seeds with 2 cups of water or for replacing eggs use 1 tbsp. of chia seeds with 3 tbsp. of water for every egg – easy!

2. Avocado

For any recipe that calls for butter or oil that contains trans fats, rather go green and reach for an avocado. It brings a delicious flavour and will leave you guilt-free!

How to use it: Substituting oil and butter with avocado is super easy to work out. For every cup of butter or oil that a recipe calls for, simply swap it out for one cup of mashed avocado.

3. Banana & Oats

Forget sugar and flour and instead go with banana and oats. Put the refined sugars and flours back in the cupboard because banana is a natural sweetener that does the job perfectly whilst providing additional fibre. Oat flour which is a great gluten-free alternative is also full of fibre.

How to use it:  For every cup of sugar that the recipe requires, replace it with 1 cup of mashed banana.

For every cup of flour that the recipe calls for replace it with 1 cup of oat flour.

4. Zucchini & Sweet Potato

If you’re more into the savoury end of the comfort eating spoon, replace regular fries and pasta with sweet potatoes and zucchini noodles. Sweet potato fries are a great alternative for regular fries and, instead of going for a carb-loaded pasta, grab some zucchini and make your own healthy alternative.

How to make it: Simply clean your zucchini and use a spiralizer to make your zucchini noodles. Next, heat up some olive oil and sauté your healthy noodles for 3-5 minutes, taking them out while still firm- it’s as simple as that.
